Potential Alert #2: Jeremy Liu

This is why I'm fickle. How does anyone expect me to stick with one or a few artists when they keep churning out outrageously talented newbies like...Jeremy Liu.

Jeremy comes from a distinguished background, having both parents being reputed musical and thespian artists in Taiwan. As a child, influence in the liberal arts was strong, and his parents nurtured his interest and natural talent in music. Schooled in the United States, Jeremy has much western influence in his musical creations, especially that of Funk and Jazz. The most intriguing aspect of Jeremy's music is the diversity and uniqueness of his melodies. It's not your usual mainstream fare, of R&B or pop, but rather un-catchy themes in a surprisingly acceptable style.

Jeremy Liu - Mr. Why

Jeremy Liu's voice, unfortunately, reminds me of many ABC (American-Born Chinese) singers, such as Wang Lee Hom, in that particular way of pronouncing Mandarin Chinese. Therefore, it does not strike me as being ultimately unique. However, that does not reflect his singing ability, which showcases great range and expressive technique, nor his amazing composition talent, which I find completely enthralling and diverse.

Of my favorite picks for Best New Artist at this year's Golden Melody Awards in Taiwan, Jeremy, so far poses the most threat to my other favorite, Million Dollar Star 3rd season winner, songstress Lala Xu. As I'm a huge fan of talented, self-composing female singing artists, and because of the dominance of male winners in this category, I would prefer Lala win this year. Unfortunately, Lala has some stiff competition.

As I don't speak any of the other 55 Chinese ethnic dialects, I can not confirm the meanings of the ethnic singing in the background of Rose. However, I really do admire and appreciate the creative fusion of "folk" or "minority" music integrated into contemporary styles. With the rising popularity of minority ethnic stars, or those of mixed Chinese ethnicities, it is no wonder that more and more entertainment arenas are exploring the cultural wonders of these ethnic nationalities.

I REALLY didn't want to say anything about this situation, but the more I thought about it, the more I needed to say something.

Look, I know you're mad. I know you feel betrayed. I know you want to write some strongly worded post-its and stick them all over JYPE. But before you get all psycho like the girl in the horror film "Carrie", let me see if I can't shed some light on the damage you're REALLY causing.

I've been a fangirl for as long as I can remember. New Kids On The Block was the first group I ever listen to at the tender age of seven. I can remember when there were all these rumors going around that the 80's pop singer Tiffany was dating one of the members. I was so devastated that I cried and all I could think about doing was finding her and scratching her eyes out with a VERY sharp object (mind you I was only seven at the time).

Obviously that didn't pan out since I'm here writing this post and not in a maximum security prison doing 25 to life for attempted murder. After a few days and realizing that not everything you read is true, I got over it and continued on with my life happily knowing I didn't do anything impulsive. Years later my obsession with NKOTB died down and I went onto my next obsession, forgetting all about NKOTB.

You may not realize this now because you're still upset over the whole situation and you're not thinking with a clear head, but what you're doing by protesting is not only hurting JYPE but many others involved with them. You don't think so? Well let me show you.

Jaebeom: He's human, young and he did something stupid. We're all like that at some point in our lives! It's not making him feel any better to know you're mad at the rest of the group for something he did.

The rest of 2PM: They're in the process of recording a new album (which in itself is stressful enough) on top of the already hectic and stressful appearance schedule they have, AND they have to deal with you guys whining and crying over a situation that they had absolutely no control over? How do you think that makes them feel? And you wonder why they're not entirely ecstatic to see you following them 24/7.

2AM: If blaming the rest of 2PM for this situation isn't idiotic enough, think of how utterly ridiculous it is to blame someone else for a situation they're not even apart of just because they're from the same company! That would be like blaming SNSD for something Super Junior did. How stupid does that sound? 2AM IS NOT 2PM, okay? They are a completely different group with completely different members with completely different songs. Just because they're in the same company doesn't mean they're the same.

The Families: How would you feel if someone you love was going through a very rough period in their life and there was absolutely nothing you could do to help them through it? That's probably what the families of these boys are feeling right now.

The Industry: I don't think all the advertisers, producers, investors, etc. are feeling safe and happy knowing at the drop of a hat the fans are boycotting everything 2PM is involved in.

The Production Crews: You may not know this but in everything an artist does there are hundreds of people behind the scenes that go through every little tiny detail many times to make sure they look and sound perfect. When shows are canceled or albums are not made, it's not just the artist that's affected but every person involved with that artist.

Other Artists: They must feel some pressure wondering if their fans could one day drop them just like that.

The Fans That Still Support: Yes there are still sane fans that support them because when you support a group, you support the WHOLE group. I understand you want to support Jaebeom, but just remember it's not the other member's fault he left.

I've been a fan of Kpop for almost six years and one of the things I love about Kpop is the fans. The way you come together to protect and take care of the artists you admire is incredibly amazing.

Unfortunately, one of the things I don't like about Kpop is...the fans. Some of the things you say and do to "protect" your favorite artist are incredibly rude and disgraceful. It not only makes you look bad but the artist you admire too. Think about that the next time you decide to "support" them.

Don't turn on your artists when they make a mistake. We are all human - flawed by nature. We're not perfect and will make many mistakes. Artists are no different.

As the readers of this blog know, GM is notoriously critical and frank. She credits herself for being practical, realistic and above most of my “superficiality”.

So you can guess my reaction when out of the blue one day, she said: “I like SHINee.”

“What?! You.. like SHINee?” Mind you, her comment may seem un-obssessive to you, but knowing GM, that self-prompted admission alone signals how much she has latched onto this group.

“Yea, I like them…I mean, I like their music…and they can dance and sing well at the same time. They’re adorable.” Adorable? When did you ever like skinny, effeminate K-pop groups?

In order to protect my integrity, and defend myself against the implications stated above, I, GM, will first describe how I feel about Kpop. Unlike ROL, who thinks Kpop is similar to chocolate, the more the better, until you hit a threshold and it becomes sickening; I think chocolate is too kind a word to describe the world of Kpop. To me, it has been more of a plague. It spreads through multiple mediums, is highly contagious and dangerously detrimental to a person's health. Just look at all those symptoms – incessant screaming, foolish chanting (albeit, very organized and rhythmic), lack of cohesive thought when spending funds, strange tactics to win the affections of their idols, and the worst part is, these infectious victims don’t feel satisfied with just themselves being infected, they also want to drag everyone else down with them.

Therefore, I've treated this tumultuous and infectious disease with a sort of detached aloofness. I listen to Kpop...but never too much. I like Kpop idols...but never get close. To me, it's something that's inevitably there and if I'm in the mood, I enjoy it for what it is. Note: This does not include the indie, lesser mainstream and less popular K music/artists that I like.

In order to explain my "sudden" proclamation of liking for SHINee, I must go back to 9 years prior when I started watching K varieties. Shinhwa was the first Kpop group that I liked, not for their music, but for their member appearances in K varieties, and it was more of a positive opinion than true fandom. As the years passed, I moved from Shinhwa to Super Junior to 2AM, and inevitably to SHINee. But unlike before where it was personalities in varieties that appealed to me, or a few notably talented members that got my attention, I found myself impressed with the overall quality of this "boy" group; in terms of music selection, dance talent, singing capabilities, distinct individualism of each member, and group cohesiveness on live performances. It's the first time I'm attached and impressed by all members of a group, almost equally.

SHINee members, like their predecessors, DBSK, are each well-rounded in musical talent and dancing. Usually in a Kpop group, members are designated certain roles, often resulting in some being good singers but not great dancers, while others are rappers but can not sing, etc. An imbalance of skill, essentially. Therefore, I've been impressed with the range of talents of each member in SHINee - in comparison to the current crop of boy groups. SME may be known as a ruthless and perfidious company that imbibes upon and exhausts its artists, but one thing I must say is the training on all essentials of being an artist, and emphasis on differentiating and diversifying their artists' talents/images are exemplary.

So what makes SHINee different for me? Firstly, I did not discover SHINee through variety programs. I discovered them through a live Music Core performance, a random video sent to me by one of my many Kpop addicts. For once, I was more than slightly amused, I was actually impressed. I've seen many live performances of Kpop groups (hard to avoid when my Kpop-addicted net buddies are constantly trying to pull me under), but they mostly ranged from moderately interesting to distasteful. Only DBSK and BEG ever got more than "positive opinion" ratings for their live performances.

I'm still averse to immersing myself into the world of Kpop, but gradual influence from those around me have made me seen more of the silver linings. And if my ROL has any say, I'm sure to be converted one of these days.

Seriously, SHINee?! I mean, I can see GM liking a particular idol like Brian, Heechul, and Jo Kwon, through watching variety programs, but a whole idol group? Especially one she considers “baby-ish” and "girly"? But hey, whatever floats her boat. As long as I get her "infected," I don't care which group does it.

We may be quite polar opposites and bicker often, but there are several things that unite us.... SHINee!

I love it and am addicted to it - that kind of excitement, thrill, delirium that comes with finding the sparkle in new artists. Jia Hui Wu is not new to the music industry. In fact he's one of the most acclaimed song and lyric writers of his generation. From Malaysia and at the age of 28 (he barely looks like he's 20), Jia Hui Wu has released 150+ songs, obtained plethora of songwriter/music awards, and has written songs for Stephanie Sun, Jacky Cheung, Karen Mok, Leon Lai, Tanya Cai, Joey Yung, Tao Jin Ying (MC Hostess of Million Dollar Star), Vic Zhou, Jerry Yan, among others. Though more people recognize his songs than his face, he's highly sought-after and respected within the industry, and I think finally releasing his own album in Taiwan will inspire more great works from Jia Hui Wu.

What I like about Jia Hui is his modesty yet inspiring individuality. His shy demeanor and slight appearance may strike you as a common bystander, but when he sings, plays his guitar, you're instantly grabbed by his soul-soothing, clairvoyant voice and musical talent. It's as if his musical creations balance and contrast his singing so there is a lot of defining unity to his compositions. Perhaps that's why I lean toward singing artists who write and sing their own songs - it has this unique wholesomeness to it. I absolutely adore this album, particularly its Theme singles - I Crazy You, Even Though I'm Willing, A Half Per Person, Listen, Want You to Say Love Me, Fairy Tale Fool...Ok, you get the point.

No, this is not a perverse ad or a silly joke, but rather the literal translation of China's newest romantic comedy family drama, 租个女友回家过年. And it is so freakin cute!

Don’t be fooled by the corny title and think this is another fluffy, inconsequential, “idol” drama. No, it is completely different from what you or I would expect. As if to lure viewers deeper into misjudging it, the drama starts off on an “idol-cliched” note with the male lead conducting an arranged date and purposely ruining it (Samsoon anyone?); meanwhile the female lead is hard at work practicing Tae Kwon Do, suddenly running off when she receives a call, and storming into the same restaurant to kick the main lead, David’s ass. But of course, she bullied the wrong guy – the real target should have been David’s best friend, who had used David’s name to cozy up to chicks, one of which happened to be Xiao Xiao’s (literally translated – Smile's) best friend...

By the time I finished watching this part, I liked the catchy theme song, was mildly intrigued by the leads’ storyline, found the dialogue contemporary and refreshing, liked the personality traits of the lead characters, and liked the acting chemistry. That’s enough for me to continue watching, despite my misgivings at the time of this being a clichéd “idol” drama. Unlike my austere requirements for Korean, Japanese, or Taiwan dramas on acting, chemistry, and character development, my judging criteria for Chinese dramas are completely…shallow.

Most of the time when I watch Chinese dramas, acting and character development are not a concern at all – it’s the industry norm to have their drama leads be either experienced and/or academically trained actors, and Chinese productions are meticulous with emotional development of their characters AKA logical and smooth transitions. So, I look for likeability of the actors, the storyline, and the characters itself. Superficial, I know, but with 500+ dramas produced in China in any given year, I can afford to.

So what makes Rent A Girlfriend Home For New Years so cute, endearing (can you believe I cried for this drama? Me? A small swimming pool to boot?), and greatly entertaining? The characters and dialogue. The writer has a good balance between modern superficiality and traditional philosophies, drama and realism, to make the character interactions completely hilarious, charming, yet realistically relatable - particularly David's traditional family, comprised of 3 naggy older sisters, stern father, soft-spoken mother, and child-like, but has full-authority, grandmother.

Smile, is an independent, tomboyish, wealthy, single-parent raised, liberal thinking, college student. David is a serious, stubborn Director in a prominent IT firm, having gone abroad and earning his MIT Masters degree before returning to China to fulfill his filial duty as the only son to a prestigious ancestral family. And it is exactly this family that drives rational David to ultimately seek a “Girlfriend-For-Rent” (part of a growing new trend of services online in Asia including "Personal Assistants") – and who do you think suggested this inane idea? Yup, the unscrupulous best friend that got David's ass kicked in the first scene of this drama.

By no means am I going to spoil this drama for the rest of you. But I will give you all a taste of the ingenious scripting for this show.

Smile: Hey...You...I'm officially saying this, when we get to your oldest sister's house, I stubbornly refuse to eat that whatever "candy egg" - if I eat any more of that, I won't even want to eat chicken for the rest of my life.
David: Fine. When we get to my oldest sister's house, I promise I won't let you eat the "candy egg"...I'll let my sister reward you a little, and fry you an egg.

David: The town of Long Men has a population of 7,000 - all descendants of Lord Sun Qun.
Smile: No wonder you're brain dead, you're the result of generations of incestuous breeding.

Isn't their relationship just adorable? Seriously, I was either laughing non-stop, infinitely touched, or crying like a baby with the dialogue in this series. However, do not assume this drama does not have flaws - it certainly does, especially in the form of how the production team tried to begin and end the drama in rather nonsensical, fluffy tones. As if it needs to justify itself of it's "idol drama" characterization. And don't get me started with the extraneous amount of musical insertions. There is also the rather stoic, or at least in comparison to the usual Chinese standards, inept acting portrayals of the second lead actors. But considering that they are singers-turned-actors, and I've seen worse in dramas of other regions and accepted it (i.e. Devil Beside You, Mike He), I'm willing to concede. I also think marathoning this drama in 2 sleepless days also affected my likeability for it, even if it's just a tad. The romantic development of the leads are too cute and irresistible to regard these disappointments. ^^ Go watch it.

ROL's Reviews #1: U-Kiss' First Album "U-Kiss Only One Album"

When you have an album where half the songs are remixes and/or instrumentals, you better make sure the other songs are AMAZING.

Pretty simple Right?

Unfortunately for U-Kiss, they didn’t take that information to heart and what you get is their first album “U-Kiss Only One Album”. A combination one decent song, a couple of lackluster dance tracks and one too many remixes. Actually more like five, but whose counting.

“Bingeul Bingeul” is an average dance song and it’s great for people who just want the mindless dance song for workouts or parties, but it’s just that…mindless. That’s fine for me though because I do love my mindless dance songs when I workout (I LOVE working out to “Man Man Ha Ni” because the beat is great if you’re walking on a treadmill).

The only real pro of this album is the song “Without You”. The beautiful piano mixed with the dance beat and their voices makes for a beautiful and fun love song which is perfect since Valentine’s day is just around the corner. I really wished they kept this one as the title track because it’s somewhat of a difference from “Man Man Ha Ni” which I did like, but there should be a little bit of variety in every new song you release.

Then the album just goes downhill from there. The over done autotune, the even more over done “brave new sound”, and the half-assed remixes makes me feel like this album was just thrown together to get it out before the slew of comebacks happen (SNSD, Hyori, SJ, etc.).

I really hope for U-Kiss’ sake their next album is better or we could be kissing them goodbye.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5
Best Track: “Without You”
Worst Track: “Mworago”-Sounds too much like “heartbreaker” (that does NOT mean I think they plagiarized) and the “brave new sound” at the end annoys me.

As you can see by the title of this post, it is the first of many J-Casts. To put it simply, a J-Cast is any post in which we inform you of happenings and updates on the blog (I.E. Maintenance and add-ons).

We are writing this J-Cast to inform you that all previous posts before this one, were older posts transferred from our own individual blogs. It was only recently that we had an epiphany to combine our eclectic views to form J-D Squared.

After this post, you will see more up-to-date news and reviews from both of us, as well as more media downloads in our J-Box. Anson Hu Returns with “Music Life”

If you don’t know who Anson Hu is – get to know him. Not known for looks (who cares?) nor smooth-talking charm (can turn me off if not done “right”), Anson is recognized for his diverse musical talents and amazing voice. To provide some reasoning as to why I’m unusually passionate about this guy, I’ve posted the following clips – view in order posted for best comprehension. Yes, it was a spontaneous, on-the-spot rendition. No, Anson is not extremely familiar with the song. Yes, Show Luo, the original singer and host of 100% Entertainment was so impressed he was stuttering and speechless, as was his co-host Alien Huang (minus the stuttering), another singer-actor.

Anson Hu is a rarity in Chinese mando-pop industry. Back before all the singing competitions brought many young idols to fame, China’s music industry was heavily doused with older, schooled, and critically acclaimed singers – “pop-y” songs and ‘idol” artists mostly imported from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, or Malay/Singapore. In fact, the trend of “imported idols” is still strong in China’s music sphere today (though China is successfully breeding its own generation of pop idols). To release a self-written c-pop album at the tender age of 18 back in 2002 was consider unusual, daring, and against mainland China’s industry norm – after all, Anson would have been competing with the likes of Leehom Wang, F4, the then red-hot newbie Jay Chow, etc. and the stigma of China’s traditionalism in music. To many, he is considered one of the pioneers in the current wave of young, popular, Chinese idol singers who can compete with popular non-mainland Chinese artists.

Touting over a billion people, China is a "super" market for many countries, music or otherwise. So, it’s not unusual to see Chinese fans learning about and eventually going crazy over a Kpop, TWpop, HKpop, Jpop singer or group – but how often do you see other regions going wild over a young C-pop idol? Most likely never. After winning multiple awards and producing hit song after hit song, other mandarin-speaking regions finally started to recognize his name and face. In 2007, Anson Hu hit the first great height of his career, releasing Men’s Songs and nabbing almost all major music awards in China with his hit single, A Man’s KTV, a song incorporating 4 lines from classic KTV songs sang by lengendary Jacky Cheung and “King of Songs” Eason Chan. His huge popularity in the mainland finally triggered Anson’s expansion to regions such as Taiwan, often considered as the most innovative and refreshing cultivator of mando-pop music. His talent, as shown in the clips above, voice, hit songs, and somewhat 4-D personality attracted many non-mainland China fans. It was the first time I felt a Chinese C-pop singing artist so favored by another region’s fans.

Of the many things I love about Anson, his musical talent, voice, singing range, 4-D personality, stunted speech (sometimes he’s rather inept in vocalizing his thoughts), I admire the dedication and pride he has in his music the most. Anson Hu’s music has many cultural and “oldies” influences (before “retro” became the new “in” for mainland artists), but he’s able to integrate modern styles, such as R&B, rap, funk, rock, etc. into his compositions. A great example combining traditional and modern music is the following song.

Anson Hu - Music Life

After his hit and award-winning album 2 years ago, Anson releases Music Life on 12.08.09. The album includes songs that have been released in commercials, singles, and ceremonies in the last 2 years, but also new never-before-released compositions like Laid Off Love Song aka the more ambiguous title Music Life. I have yet to be disappointed with Anson’s albums, as he’s constantly incorporating current themes to retain my attention. In his last mini-album, he renditioned old 1930s-1950s songs to celebrate China’s 60th anniversary. This time, Anson’s newest album touches on the global recession and economic impact on people’s lives. Looks like I’m going to be rolling into my 8th year as a fan. ^_^

2009 New Actress Discovery: Moon Chae Won

I started this post a while ago and only published it now, partly because of my vacation and hectic schedule, partly because this post is just as much about MCW as it is about my viewing sentiments.

After over a decade of Asian entertainment viewing, I’ve developed a certain sensitivity to “potentials,” or more aptly put, a gut feeling about actors/productions. Moon Chae Won first popped onto my radar when Brilliant Legacy, or Shining Inheritance, starting airing in Korea. I was instantly turned off when what seemed like a 10-minute, cliched, korea-has-no-police-no-cameras-nor-traffic-laws, car-chase scene by the 2 leads appeared in the drama. But Moon Chae Won’s, whom I did not know her name at the time, pensive and soulful eyes caught my attention. I remember thinking, "who is this actress?" and feeling the urge to look her up…but the lack of intrigue from the 2 lead characters/actors, other entertainment, and life threw me off that train of thought.

It wasn’t until My Fair Lady that I rediscovered her, found out her name, and officially researched her repertoire. Perhaps its because I’m innately fickle, so I adore actors who diversify their roles and works. Having seen glimpses of MCW’s previous character, I knew MFL’s role was a contrasting one. But a strong contrast in roles does not make a good actress – it depends entirely on the successful embodiment of that character – and Eui Joo of MFL was a refreshing, creative, witty portrayal. That character became my focal point of the entire drama. And yes, I did make comparisons, as reluctant as I was to MFL’s leading actress, YEH. But before I go any further I must express a few sentiments.

I believe:
1. Natural talent is just as important as hard-working perseverance.
2. Instantaneous grasp of a role/character is more inspiring and creditable.
3. Instantaneous acting chemistry between actors is more awe-inducing and laudable.
4. Creative, original, and/or unique acting mannerisms or dialogue expression attests to an actor’s talent, whether natural or learned.
5. Actors who can successfully switch from one vastly different role to another and maintain equal if not greater charm than his/her previously successful role(s) is worthy of acclaim.

Therefore, I am not easily impressed with actors who take a long time to embody a character, achieve chemistry with their co-stars, develop character charm in front of the camera, or switch to a new, entirely different role. What construe as “a long time?” It depends. But I seem to applaud a performance and become passionate about a particular portrayal/character within the first 10 minutes of onscreen appearance, and an actor within the first several works I’ve seen. I attribute my quick assessment to having watched too many movies/dramas for my own good and knowing myself well, that it only takes me a relatively short time to know whether a) I’ll love the acting portrayal b) I’ll love the production c) I’ll want to watch it at that particular time d) it’ll be enjoyment, enlightenment, or both that I’ll be getting from watching.

That said, it may be due to the lack of immediate embodiment of characters and chemistry between the other leads of the drama that made MCW’s EJ more attractive, innovative, and inspiring to me. So I moved onto another MCW work, Painter of the Wind, a drama I’ve been meaning to watch because of my great liking for Moon Geun Young. Needless to say, I was again impressed that MCW was able to hold her own and have such amazing chemistry, with another female no less, in the first major drama work of her career.

I haven’t had the desire nor opportunity to go back and watch Brilliant Legacy, but the many proclamations of Chae Won’s acting in this drama, and the below MV, has lulled me to attempt this somewhat daunting task.

The Time Is Upon Us

Over the last few days, teasers for 2AM's new song (set to be released on Jan 21st) have slowly appeared exciting fans everywhere. Aside from a new look, the big question plaguing fans is whether the song will be another slow song or is 2AM branching out to with a dance track?

The first teaser had a guy in the shadows (apparently one of the 2AM members) dancing, yet the next two teasers with 2AM members Seulong and Jinwoon are of them singing a slow song. Then just a few hours ago an audio sample was released with "To Her" being the title of the track and featuring 2PM member Chansung rapping.

Either way, I think the one thing that all fans can agree on is that the song will be hot and I wish thursday would get here faster. Judge for yourself by watching all the teasers below, updated with Changmin's and Jo Kwon's teaser MV's that were just released!

Crown Lu - 7 Day

After grabbing the 2009 Golden Melody Award’s (Taiwanese Grammy) Best New Artist amid tough competition, Crowd Lu released his 2nd album on 10.31.2009. Crowd Lu is one of those unique people you cannot avoid noticing. Perhaps it’s his “geeky-homebody” getup or his weird, yet endearing train of thought that has much of Taiwan’s HS/college students in an uproar and urge to mimick his iconic style/music. Crowd, or Vitas, as he’s often referred to because of his ability to sing in high-pitched “dolphin” ranges (so termed because the pitches are so high only dolphins can hear it), was once in a devastating car accident that almost crippled his leg.

Yet, the guy is amazingly go-lucky, happy, and innocent in the way he views music, the world, and people around him. There is a boundless, free, and real quality to his self-written, self-accompanied, and self-sang music. And perhaps that is his greatest appeal; that his music speaks to practical, everyday life while maintaining a sliver of humor, innocence, and brightness to it.

Jason Zhang - Through Trilogy

Jason Zhang released 3rd album, Through Trilogy, on 11.02.09. He was most broadly recognized as being a talented contestant of Hunan Broadcasting Station’s SuperBoy, a spinoff from the sensational SuperGirl singing competitions, in 2007. Talent, heart, passion for music, and filial duty describes Jason Zhang. Coming from a destitute family, Jason matured young, knowing the value of family and hard work. Perhaps it was his reticence and seriousness that contributed to his lower likeability/popularity in the competition, but that didn't stop Jason from showing the country his amazing talents as a singer and artist.

After placing 4th in SuperBoys (a complete travesty in my opinion b/c I judge singing competitions by talent and artist-range potential, not physical appearance and popularity), Jason’s fans rallied behind the multi-talented singer. He obtained much support from the MC’s of the singing competition, and even gained a touchingly-sweet romance with Nana Xie - a comedic, tomboyish, highly popular MC-host of the Hunan Station (their friendship-turned-romance was highly controversial at the time of the competition).
Now, Jason is considered one of the most popular and sought-after young male singers in China, as well as one of the most happy and fulfilled. It only shows that heart, hard-work, and talent can surpass the adversities of poverty, physical appearance, social aptitude, and any societal measure.

Having already been somewhat jaded from previous SuperGirl competitions, the 2007 SuperBoy was the last straw for me. It proved to prevent all future viewings of Hunan Station’s singing competitions. My favorite contestants at the time of the SuperGirl and SuperBoy competitions, who I thought should have won…did not win. But if I were to be shameless and direct, almost all of them have succeeded in greater bounds than the ones who did win, at least in the way I view "success."

Of my favorites included Jane Zhang, Bibi Zhou, Jason Zhang, Wang Zhen Liang, and a few other extremely musically talented singers. So even though I was miffed at the popularity contests of these competitions, I am rectified by the fact that the industry and public at large gave them their due opportunities, successes, and awards. I am infinitely happy that China’s music industry has not receded to pure superficiality as it came dangerously close to between the years of 2004 – 2008. I think there is more of a balance now between the commercially superficial and the illuminative deep in China's music industry, but it can definitely learn from Taiwan and spur more popular, yet innovative and creative musical talents. I would love if a majority of C-pop idols start creating new sounds, and writing their own music. With a country of more than a billion brains, you gotta think there are more innovative ideas out there.

Ivana Wong - On The Wings of Time

Ivana Wong, one of the first and most notable female song-writing and singing artist of the Cantonese music industry, as many of their female singers did (do) not compose and are heavily packaged by record companies, released On Wings of Time on 10.29.09. She was, to me, a breakthrough from the dance-y, pop-y, and flashy young generation of Canto singers in the early 2000s. Her music is not usually mainstream and has more of a soul-searching aspect to it, but I love the originality and creativity of her works – very melancholy indie.

Cindy Yen

New artist Cindy Yen debuts with prominent support from legendary Jay Chow, lyricist Fang Wen Shan, and magnate record company Sony Music on 10.30.2009. Cindy’s album has Jazz/R&B influences and instrumental emphasis due to her background. The girl is skilled in both piano and violin, and writes her own music – following the growing trend of musically inclined female artists in Taiwan. And to show off these attributes, Sony released the following theme track MV, featuring a duet with Jay Chow and Cindy’s instrumental talents.

Yoga Lin

Yoga Lin, one of my favorite contestants and the winner of Taiwan’s Million Dollar Star singing competition, the legendary Season 1, released his 2nd album on 10.30.2009. Of this 1st season, a record number of now-famous talented singer discoveries were made, including Yoga Lin, Jam Hsiao, and Aska Yang Zhong Wei. Yoga Lin, as the youngest “Prince” of the “Four Princes” of Season 1, is often compared to his idol, "King of Songs" and "Singing Genius," Eason Chan, who also arose out of a singing competition and has a very laid-back, mesmerizing, unique interpretation of song vocalization. Like Eason, Yoga has an uncanny ability to express & make “unpopular” or “cold” songs, likeable. His record company is not averse to spending big bucks on this now 22 year old “singing genius” – spending record budgets on a newbie, hoping to nurture another "King of Songs."

So Wait...HyunA Can't Watch Her Own MV??

But honestly, was anyone really shocked by this? No Seriously?

On January 14th, HyunA's first solo MV for her single "Change" was slapped with the dreaded (could be coveted on how you look at it) "19+ age audience" label.

“After deliberation, the music video has been deemed too sexual, so it will only be viewable for a 19+ age audience,” a Cube Entertainment rep revealed.

And...you didn't realize this when you were making the video?? Epic Fail.

2009 Male Newcomer, Singer: Abin

Normally, I would briefly introduce an artist and give a sampling of the songs that characterizes the artist’s style and/or songs I like, but I’ve been moody due to a serious bout of the common cold, so I’m going to babble a bit.

As most have come to realize, I have a “thing” for artists who are creatively unique, whether it’s singing, acting, personality, or whatever characteristics/talents the person possesses. I discovered Abin (pronounced Ah Bing) in early 2009 - Febuary to be exact - several months after he had released his album in Taiwan, and only in association with Penny Dai, another talented, creative song-writer/singer/director that I love. Well, I was knocked over by this guy’s ability to touch me with such sensitive and spell-binding singing and song-writing, and don’t get me started with the soulful guitar playing – I fell so hard you could literally peel me off the sidewalk.

So was I a little miffed that Abin didn’t make the nomination for the Taiwanese Grammy’s? You bet. But considering the stiff competition - 3 of the 5 nominees were Million Dollar Star contestants, and many other newcomers who were also skipped out of a nomination - I was pacified in knowing that Abin’s singing career in Taiwan had at least got off to a great start. Also, I liked all of the nominees so it wasn’t like I wanted them to not get their nominations.

Abin is not new to the music industry, having released albums in Malaysia, but 2009 was really the year he expanded from Malay to Taiwan and the broader Chinese/Mandarin music market. Part of his reason for not giving up on being a singer/song-writer was to realize his father’s dream, who passed away without making it as a singer. I also love that he’s nice and soft-spoken, but sticks to his philosophies and is – you all know I’m a sucker for this – an independent thinker – which makes guys easily irresistible to me. I won’t expound any further in case your expectations get too high, so here’s Abin with his 2 Taiwan-released albums.

C.N. Blue Is Blowing Everyone Away

*Note* This post was orginally posted on my personal blog two weeks ago. Since then, the group has won both KBS Music Bank on 1/29/10 and SBS Inkigayo Mutizen on 1/31/10, which is amazing for a group who hasn't even seen their 100 days pass. Will this trend keep going or will the powerhouse that is SNSD have them seeing blue?

Oh how I'm loving these boys even more every day!

Indie Pop/Rock band C.N. Blue debuted yesterday and already they're taking the KPop world by storm, giving fellow rookies MBLAQ and Beast some major competition.

They released the MV for their first single "I'm A Loner" on the 14th and within 24 hours it was #1 on the MNet Charts and #2 on the Hanteo Charts.

The group also had their first showcase and will debut on "Music Bank" this weekend. I for one am VERY happy they're doing so well. Their album "Blue Tory"; which is out right now; is awesome, so go pick it up right now and support them!

Evan Yo-Be Lonely, Then

Evan Yo released his 3rd album, Be Lonely, Then on 10.09.2009. He debuted in 2006 at 18 yrs old (they kept using his Asian age, 19), under great “sponsorship” from famous Taiwanese MC-host, Jacky Wu, who also endorsed Jay Chow and Jolin Tsai to fame. Having been top of his class entering Taiwan University’s music school, and having tall, good looks, Evan was heavily touted as the next Jay Chow/Leehom Wang.

His music has many western rock, funk, and jazz influences, and he is extremely talented in violin, piano, and singing (as they are his University majors). Unfortunately, Sony Records hasn’t been able to really differentiate and time his releases properly – Evan has met stiff competition from Million Dollar Star participants entering the music industry – who’ve taken T-music scene by storm.

That said, I’ve never been a believer that ratings/popularity = quality, so I’ve listened to all his albums, saw some of his variety appearances showcasing his talent, and my conclusion? He’s a talented potential and a cutie.

Five years ago, The God Motha introduced me to Korean dramas by suggesting “My Name Is Kim Sam-Soon” and after that I’ve been hooked on Korean entertainment since. I love the drama; it’s actually my favorite drama; but I started watching it mostly because I heard “She Is” by Clazziquai. After hearing Alex’s sexy voice, I wanted to find out as much as I can about this group. That lead to me finding Soompi and the rest is history.

AZN.tv (which they need to bring back!!) had a show called “The Bridge” that would show Asian music videos and one of them was Super Junior’s “U”. for the longest time, I thought half the guys were backup dancers until I was on Soompi and read all of them were apart of the group. The idea of a thirteen member group completely surprised me because we don’t have anything remotely like that in America. There were a few members that I found interesting, but for the most part I stayed away from them mostly because of the sheer size of the group and I was certain I wasn’t going to remember all their names.

It wasn’t until I saw one of the performances for Sorry, Sorry that I started taking notice of Super Junior again. Now the second part of the video “Sorry, Sorry-Answer” was released a few days ago.

I’m in love with this video. The video albeit simple is beautifully executed with the black and white tones. I love the contrast of sleek and modern electronics and furniture to rustic old world furnishings, making it look sexy and sophisticated. The use of light and shadows in this video was also used beautifully. It almost made everything come to life.

The song was remixed perfectly and a welcome addition to the CD. Recently with all the repackaged CD’s being released usually we would hear a catchy song being remixed into this loud and pulsating techno version that, in most situations, ruined the song. This song however was remixed into a sultry R&B version that showcased the boys vocals. I was pleasantly surprised to hear Yesung’s crooning at the beginning, never knowing of his singing abilities since I’m a newbie when it comes to Super Junior.

In conclusion, I’m wouldn’t say I’m officially an E.L.F yet (I love how I totally put yet at the end of this statement. It’s like I have a premonition *lol*), but I loved the video and hoping I get to here more songs that show off their vocals. If you want more information on SJ, please visit sj-world.net for more.

Most of you have probably heard of this Youtube sensation that guested on a popular Korean variety program called Star King, who then went on to Ellen, Oprah, and slew of big-time talk shows across the globe. Not only is she recognized in her natural market, Asia, she’s been well-received by North American and European countries as well (I hear the Italians are quite crazy about her).

I have yet to see such a young, Asian singer be so widely hyped and accepted by audiences world-wide. Perhaps it’s because of her unrelentless passion for singing despite her down-trodden circumstances growing up that has captured people’s hearts, or that her voice strikes a cord with listeners, but whatever it is, it seems like this young singer is going to be an international phenomenon, if not already. *Her version of Listen never gets old – it’s always goosebump-inducing.*

Perhaps it’s the over-packaged, and over-gimmicked (in trying to differentiate them) presentation of Kpop artists/groups by companies, that I’ve become immune to the Kpop scene. So I was pleasantly surprised to learn of IU; a young, lyrically-emphasizing, music-writing, guitar-playing, indie-soul singing, non-Kpop-cookie-cutter-presented talent. IU’s debut in mainstream music sparked talk of a revival in the industry, and a new generation of teen singers. From the second album it seems IU’s label is still tweaking on how to “image” her to be accepted in mainstream Kpop; But many are waiting to see if, and how, this young artist survives and revoluntionizes a growing indie-Kpop segment of mainstream Korean music. Singapore has long been known as a place that cultivates talents and rear innovative musical artists. Many of their notable singers gained popularity because of their creative leanings, industry acclaimations, Chinese “Grammy” winnings, and critical hype. So I was surprised to discover a new, identical-twin duo (Miko & Yumi), who shows diverse potential in singing, musical creativity, dancing, and transcending borders when they’ve been mundanely marketed. They’ve trained in Korea and Japan for various styles of dance, studied piano and violin, learned various languages (touting Chinese, English, Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese, etc.), and sing well (despite their “idol” image). Of course, their youth, prettiness, and maturity also contributes to BY2’s star potential, but I’m more intrigued by their expansive repertoire of talents. Not partial to how their company has imaged them (or outfit-ed them – too sexy), and their pop-y song selections (they are capable of diverse genres), but I guess that’s a trend in Asia hard to bypass.

Netizens: A New and Nauseating Era of Fandom

Also, I do not in any way support these fans and their methods of getting noticed by their favorite idol. There are many ways of supporting that are safer and that will not gross them out (and the rest of us for that matter). Check your country’s website for ways of supporting your favorite idol.

An 1800’s quote by philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche is reigning true amongst a few Korean netizens a hundred and thiry years later.

Within the last two weeks Taecyeon from 2PM, Lee Joon from MBLAQ and Hongki
from F.T. Island all have received the crimson declarations of love from infatuated fans.

It started off with Taecyeon’s letter; written by a female hottest. The girl wanted to prove her undying love and affection to him by sending him the letter written with her…well I‘ll let the girl‘s quote explain:

‘I dedicate to Taecyeon my period blood letter. Ok Taecyeon, You cannot live without me. Sprinkled with a few strands of my pubes’.

About a week later, Lee Joon’s fan letter; written by a female A+; emerged. This girl, apparently “shamed” by the last girls letter, dangerously slit her wrist and stated:

"ㅋㅋ What up with Ok Taecyeon period letter? If you're gonna do one, at least do it right ㅋㅋ How dirty. Period blood? Act your age ㅜㅜㅋ Don't do that, but do it right. Do it right. Copying that ajumma who wrote that period letter."

Now as of yesterday, word has come out that Hongki also received a letter from a female primadonna. Were not sure exactly the reasoning behind this letter, but a lot of people are speculating it’s based on the old “15 minutes of fame” adage. The fan’s method of writing the letter was by pricking her finger and using the blood from her finger to write the letter. Still incredibly dangerous and gross, although not as bad as the other two, The girl wrote a simple note saying:

"Lee Honki, you know that I love you right?"

Within the last year we’ve seen the netizen do and say some crazy things (i.e., Jaebeom), but this just takes the cake. When will the insanity stop? Stuff like this is not going to make your favorite idol like you even more, if anything, it’s going to get you a court- orderd restraining order and/or an insane amount of equally crazed fans raiding your personal site with hate mail and death threats. Sending fan mail is a good way to show your support, but please (for all of us), if you’re going to do that…use a pen.

The Affairs of ‘My Fair Lady’

For those following the Kdrama universe, you must have heard of, if not participated in, the ‘drama’ outside of the drama, My Fair Lady. And I? Well, you can say I’ve had my fair share of bump-ins with the fans – rare, since I usually ignore such wars, and pick my battles even if an invasion was evident.

So what is causing such a ruckus in the universe of Kdrama? A few premises first. Yoon Eun Hye’s dramas are fanatically popular – and I’ve seen all to date; Largely because she impressed me early on and haven’t faltered far from my expectations. As YEH’s comeback after 2 years, you can say I was expecting…a contingency from where she left off - if not an improvement. Add the addition of Jung Il Woo, who showed much maturity and perseverance in his role of Iljimae, the likeability of Yoon Sang Hyun’s portrayals, and the much talked about acting capability of Moon Chae Won…you can go as far as say I was thrilled about this drama.

Blame it on the high profile participations, glorified promotions, the intolerance of netizens, the downtrodden economy, or whatever it may be…but the participants of this drama, especially it’s leading lady, YEH, is getting much heat over what may seem to some, as completely unfair and unjustified. Unfair, it may be, but unjustified…it is not.

1) Expectation: Expectations for this drama were high, even with the stigma of ‘romantic comedy’ attached. It’s largely due to the success, in quality and/or popularity, of the four leading actors’ ‘still-fresh’ previous works, including Coffee Prince, Return of Iljimae, Queen of Housewives, and Brilliant Legacy. Somewhat like when a team of athletes have obtained bronze, silver, and gold medals, in the last few years, and more than once, you have certain expectations that they’ll stay on the podium. In addition, it’s a trendy rom-com, regardless of scripting/directing, its well-received actors should make it easily approachable. (I’ll make a small stab at BOF here.)

2) Intrigue: With the exception of YEH, the other leads have not been widely known for, nor even participated in, rom-com works. Many are unsure of how these actors will do on a genre they’ve not specialized in. As for leading lady, YEH – it’s been 2 years, and like any artist who’s been gone for some time, you’re wondering what time and experience, maybe unbeknownst to you, has done to shape this artist. It all adds to the unknown, mystique, and the intrigue of this drama.

3) Focus: There is much media spotlight and focus, particularly in Kdrama cyberspace due to the above mentioned points, but also because the majority of the ones online and spreading the hype, are in the age brackets to watch this type of show (Lols, as if you all didn’t know). Add that to glorified media reports, plethora of promotions, expectations, intrigue, and you now have a lot of people, who may not originally have a particular liking to the actors or drama content, pay attention.

Therefore, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the drama, along with it’s leading actress is facing a mountain of criticism. Why? Well, when people are let down, angry, frustrated, or harbor any negative emotion, they reflexively narrow down on one, or a few, targets, and release it, usually out of proportion. It’s also the easiest to focus on the ‘biggest’ or most prominent target – similarly to how the world’s financial crisis is “all America’s fault,” though Europe and Asia also contributed to the financial speculation. So the next question is why are viewers/netizens let down?

It’s not one thing that seems lackluster about the drama, it’s actually several factors that add to a general sense of “something is missing” in My Fair Lady. Those paying attention to this drama because of the hype, and not tied to a particular interest group to give allowances, are plentiful...younger, more passionate, and outspoken. So if these relatively objective (not part of a fandom) viewers see something they don’t like, or feel disappointed, they are going to voice it. And herein lies the problem. ‘Objective’ viewers reflexively try to pin-point their sense of disappointment (on YEH here) in order to validate their opinions. This in turn offends ‘subjective’ viewers to defend their idols or ideas…the nit-picking of comments/opinions go back and forth, assumptions are irrationally made, and before you know it, a war has broken out. Like a hound smelling blood in the air, the media further extorts and sensationalizes the situation, which then is further exacerbated by netizens. It’s a vicious cycle.

Personal Views: It’s true, I am disappointed with the drama – though as time goes by I’m growing somewhat attached, like anything else in life with time. I was expecting YEH to ka-boom me with her chemistry, like she’s always been able to do with her male co-stars, if not her portrayal of the character. Because…I believed in her; in her innate perceptiveness as an actress, her onscreen charm, her willingness to succeed. I felt let down. Add some unnatural, and/or over-the-top portrayals, ineffective directing, hapzard scripting to the mix, and it was disappointment all around. I was depressed; sad, to see great, harboring-such-potential actors, not have it work out. So I’ve latched onto positive remnants of the drama, including Wang Seok Hyun and Moon Chae Won.

Having witnessed a few cyber wars, I can truly say I understand how both sides feel, even if I may not agree with some positions. However, coming from a person who truly liked YEH, not just for her works, but also her down-to-earth, charming personality, I was quite disappointed with some of her fans. I don’t think I, nor some others, were extreme in criticism, or tried to target disappointment on one person. Yet, we must have been caught in the battle-rage of this war for her fans to lash out at our comments – to which I can understand. In a war, when there have been attacks from the ‘enemy’ – even a shadow that resembles the ‘enemy’ will be terminated, so as to prevent possible loss. Being completely honest, I now feel, though it may be shallow to feel so, and against my rational mentality, somewhat detached from YEH. If it had only been her lackluster performance, I would have gotten over it easily enough, offering reasons such as “she’s been out of practice,” “her co-stars don’t help spark her acting chemistry,” and the like; But to add insult to injury from fans – it has impacted my personal attachment to the actress. I can only hazard a guess that if I, who harbors such like and respect for her and is usually of a more rational mentality, were to feel this way, how would others who took greater offense, feel towards the actress?

This is why I feel utterly sympathetic to YEH, as an actress and as a person. Not only is she being criticized from all sides, sometimes overly harsh, for her acting capabilities, but now some of her fans are further aggravating the situation and driving others to have negative associations with YEH, as an individual. Everything has a positive and negative connotation - supporters can be your source of inspiration, but they can also be your source of frustration. I’ve seen this happen, time and time again in my decade long viewing of Asian entertainment. However, this time, it hit a little closer to home.

Coco Lee Returns with ‘East To West’

Though I’ve always been bothered with Coco’s image, I love many of her songs and give her credit for being one of the first and highly popular female singers who heavily incorporated western influences/singing styles into Asian music – she was also one of the first to introduce “Chinese-style,” or as I like to call it, “Jay-style” (for Jay Chow, who wrote the hit song for Coco prior to his legendary debut), hybrids of contemporary music with traditional Chinese culture. I’m once again ambivalent with her MVs, but I really like the songs. She is, afterall, an open-minded, daring, and talented singer.

Five Korean ‘Potentials’

As many of you know, I love discovering new potentials; by which I define as young or newer artists who have displayed enough talent, charisma, and/or character for me to expect their transformation into brilliant “stars” in the near future. In no particular order, and at the moment (ATM), here they are…

1. Song Joong Ki

First Discovered…as a handsome cameo in A Frozen Flower. However, it wasn’t until his role as ‘Joong Po’ in Triple that I “fell in love” with this older-but-baby-faced new actor. His cameo in My Fair Lady got me further anticipating this newbie, though it was too short a cameo, and the drama left much to be desired. ‘Potential’ Points…well, other than looking adorably squishy and honest, the guy has won me over with his natural protrayal, and chemistry with his co-stars. It’s hard to find young and new actors who consistently & convincingly performs, generates great chemistry onscreen with all co-stars, and showcases charisma - when he only appears for maybe less than a couple minutes at a time. Currently, he’s MC-ing and acting. Dramabeans posted a great interview on him — Read It Here. Keep a lookout for this cutie as he enters mainstream Korean entertainment.

2. Shin Se Kyeong

First Discovered…with Moon Geun Yeong in My Little Bride. The girl did not catch my attention for her looks, nor the role she got, but rather the expression in her eyes and contemplative protrayal. There seems to be a melochany and pensive shadow in her eyes when she’s looking at the camera. ‘Potential’ Points…I’ve seen her in 2 1/2 movies (I only saw snipets of Five Senses of Eros - her baring protrayal will leave an impression on you); and 2 dramas, Queen Seon Deok, and recently airing, High Kick 2. In all her works, she displays befitting eye expressions, realistic protrayals, good transitioning, and relays the characters’ emotions well - right from the start. I have expectations that this young actress is going to do well in the artistic arena, but don’t know about her popularity marks with the audience. Let’s see how she does capturing viewers’ hearts now that she’s in a daily drama.

3. Jung Il Woo

First Discovered…in High Kick, which I only skimmed a couple of episodes before dropping because I found it to be rather silly and lacking plot. I really discovered him in his breakthrough drama, The Return of Iljimae. ‘Potential’ Points…As his first leading role, his protray of Iljimae did not disappoint. He showed good eye expression, great chemistry with his female lead, transitioned complex emotions well, and sincere acting. There is no doubt, however, that the role, his looks, and the production values of Iljimae buoyed his likeability and appropriateness of his protrayal. Il Woo’s new role in My Fair Lady lacks substance/development in comparison, but there were a few scenes in a few episodes that showcased his ability to relay subtle emotions. He seems to have the talent, popularity, and luck going for him.

4. Kim So Eun

First Discovered…in a CF with Super Junior’s Kim Ki Bum. At the time, I had no idea who she was, but I found her to have incredibly natural, and varied facial expressions. It would be years later that I re-discover her in Boys Over Flowers. To be honest, I was prepared to like her, since I’ve liked all of the actresses who’ve played 'Yuuki' in Hana Yori Dango, but I was knocked-over by her instaneous chemistry with Kim Bum. Not only did she not disappoint, she shined in front of the camera despite her limited screentime. ‘Potential’ Points…KSE did exceptionally well as young 'Chun Chu' in Empress Chun Chu, so great that I could not get used to the adult version of the Empress and had to drop it. So Eun’s role in Man Who Can’t Get Married had more screentime, but lacked real character development. I found the show’s script disjointed. I was not disappointed with her performance though, as once again, she convincingly delved into the character right from the gecko, and generated great chemistry with both of her male love interests – even when one of them was older by 20+ years (I was expecting awkwardness or a disconnect). Kim So Eun may not be the most artful in acting amongst the ‘potentials,’ but shows great character and promise because of her natural expressiveness and innate perceptiveness of her roles. 5. Jung Ui Chul

First Discovered…alongside Jang Geun Suk in DoReMiFaSo and boy, did he instantly grab my attention. It was the dark, brooding expression in his eyes that caught me – the same set of eyes that seized me when I saw him on top of the roof, ready to jump, looking at Jandi, as he cameo-ed in Boys Over Flowers. ‘Potential’ Points…Charisma. Simply put, the guy just impacts the screen – you can not dismiss his presence nor that soulful, pensive, sometimes condescending expression in his eyes. Much of the time, he doesn’t even speak onscreen. Rather, he uses body language, facial expression, and eyes to relay his characters, and transition from thought to action. That to me, is the epitome of acting – not acting. Of the 5 potentials, he seems to be the least active in getting into mainstream K media - you’ll be hard pressed to find his interviews, variety appearance, drama roles, scandals, or even MVs/CFs. Keep an eye on this one, he may just be the dark horse. ^_*

Three of the above mentioned ‘potentials’ are in this artistic, sexually explicit movie. There are tons of other actors that I really like in here, but I haven’t been able to get my hands on a HQ version of the full movie. For more info on the film - Read Here.

As a note, this is not my complete list, just some ATMs that have left great impressions and expectations of artistic development in the near future. Also, I do not include ‘potentials’ who I have not seen in at least 3/4 different roles because I’m a firm believer of brilliance comfirmed by consistency. I highly suggest checking some of these actor’s related works, especially their breakthrough productions, and the below movie.

2009 MBC Gayo Daejun: My Top Ten

You know you have too many award shows when the last award show is a rehash of every music show throughout the year with a few special performances mixed in to make it a little interesting. That is exactly what the MBC Gayo Daejun unfortunately did.

It was really hard to find ten performances I actually liked that were different from what they normally did on the music shows, but I think I came up with a pretty good list.

1. After School & SDB-When I Grow Up: Gahee and Bekah are my 2 fav members now!

2. 2PM & SNSD Stage: Very cute stage

3. SG Wannabe & MIJI: Oh their voices were amazing!

4. Baek Ji Young & Lee Seung Gi-My Ear Candy: I was shocked by this and I love LSG More after this performance (not that I didn't like him before).

5. Brown Eyed Girls Stage

6. 2PM Stage: I wish I loved this one more, but the other two were so much better

‘Confucius’ Ends Shooting

One of the most anticipated Chinese movies of 2010, Confucius, ended shooting on 9.2.2009. It was accompanied by the release of a 3 minute trailer that was spread quickly by Chinese netizens. The movie starrs international sensation, Chow Yun Fat; celebrated actress Zhou Xun; rising star Ren Quan; and many other critically acclaimed actors. Confucius documents Confucius’s life, the legendary philosopher from 551 BC – 479 BC, whose profound teachings on moral learning and pursuit of self-study have influenced societal and ruling doctrines in Asia for over 2000 years. I’m thrilled about this movie – it’s the first movie documenting Confucius’s life and boasts a stellar cast. It will most likely be releasing internationally, around 2010 Chinese Lunar New Year.

2009 KBS Gayo Daejun: ROL's Top Ten

Being monkey-in-the-middle between two rival channels with massive lineups is not a fun position to be in. Fortunately, it didn’t affect KBS’s Gayo Daejun at all. In my opinion, KBS’ show was my favorite of the three festivals. It didn’t have a huge building that looked like an airport hanger or huge set pieces that looked like they were from a movie, but everything seemed to flow better and didn’t seem so rushed.

Also, The variety of the performances were better, in my opinion, with idols sharing the stage with legends and many different genres of music were represented instead of it just being one big idol show (not that I mind, but sometimes you need a little variety in your life).

Here is my top 10 and honorable mentions. Again this was incredibly hard to choose everyone was so good!

1. 2PM Stage: They've been suprising me with every stage and I love "Tired of Waiting"

2. IRIS OST Recap: KTW, BJY & SSH together at the end was just amazing

3. 2NE1-Fire: Even with a basic stage they can totally rock the house. And how can you not like this song!

4. KTW, Jonghyun & Kim Jung Mo-Beat It: Their voices were so amazing!

5. 1N2D Stage

6. SSH & 2PM Special Stage: They were so adorable here when they were fainting over SSH *lol*

7. 2NE1 & Lee Seung Chul

8. SNSD, BEG & Davichi-I’ll Be There: Their voices together sound amazing!

9. MC Mong Stage- Horror Show: Loved the performance and if you haven't watched the video, do it. It's hillarious!

Nothing But A Chord

Alright, my first male post (gotta diversify here – lol). Newcomer, A Chord, released his album 4.15.2009. His dream at 16 was to become a ‘composer-singer-comedian,’ and was first discovered on a small-scale singing competition sponsored by Taiwanese variety program “Guess, Guess, Guess.” The young new potential also writes his own songs/lyrics, plays multiple instruments, got his own attitude/style…seeing a trend here? ^_^ Anyways, here’s a sample of his work. A Chord is also the playful cutie who rapped for “Wipe Your Tears” charity song posted yesterday.

However, I can not honestly say I love her because I do not really know her personality - a must known for me when it comes to reaching "love" status for my female artists - but I do respect her talent. 2009 SBS Gayo Daejun: ROL's Top Ten

First out of the gate, SBS Gayo Daejun is shaping up to be the big festival of the year with literally EVERYONE in Kpop set to attend.

From hot hip-hop performances to cool singers giving it their all, cute girl groups to even cuter boy bands, epic drama parodies to the glorious return of Heesica, the SBS Gayo Daejun has something for every fan.

Here is my top ten of the best performances of the night. This was extremely hard for me to choose because everyone did so well this year. Do you agree with me?

1. 2PM Stage: everything about this performance was top notch. They really stepped it up and I was especially impressed with the acrobatics. I was not to fond of "Heartbeat" when I first heard it, but now I may have to go back and give it a second look.

2. Super Junior Stage: masks aside (can we please retire the masks in 2010), their performance was electric. They had everyone in the place dancing, and OMG Yesung's voice was HOT! In my opinion, "Sorry, Sorry" was the best song of 2009. I mean how can you not get up and dance to that song!

3. Kim Tae Woo, Junsu, Jonghyun & K.Will Special Stage: Their voices individually and together were amazing. Every time I hear "Bump & Grind" I always think back to the movie "Without A Paddle" (watch it, it's hillarious!), and I can't help but laugh when I hear this song. But Junsu TOTALLY made me love this song again.

4. CL & GD-The Leaders: How hot was that performance! though GD NEEDS to grow his hair back. Not really liking the "Moe from the 3 stooges" look. The only thing I wish was that Teddy was there.

5. SNSD Stage: Great performance, very energetic. Love the set for "Gee" and I LOVE the PJ's they look so comfortable!

6. CL-Heartbreaker: CL totally gave GD a run for his money with her version of "Heartbreaker". Would've totally pwned if she did the dance in those heels, but none-the-less, an awesome performace from "The One and Only Baddest Female".

7. GD & Taeyang-Lies & Korean Dream: How adorable were they as kids! and the mini GD & Taeyang were a nice touch. The performance was great and it's so nice to see them still friends after 10 years.

8. Brown Eyed Girls ft. 2AM-Sign (Remix): I LOVE the remix and their voices were amazing. Great Performance from an awesome group!

9. 2AM, 2PM & Beast-Sign: Jo Kwon as Ga In. One word, EPIC! out of this set of performances, they were the best!

10. Davichi & 2AM Stage: Both group's voices were all on point and I love both songs.

-4Minute, Kara & After School-Heartbeat: awesome performance!
-SJ, SHINee & MBLAQ-Muzik: Key and Joon looked hot, loved Shindong's wig and I absolutely LOVE Mir in pigtails *lol*
-Bom & Taeyang-You & I: They really need to put this version on either one of their albums!
-MBLAQ & Beast Dance Battle: Joon looked hot ripping his shirt, but Seungho totally pwned with the flips!
-2PM-Bo Peep Bo Peep: Made this song 50 times better IMO
-SHINee & SJ-Gee: HEESICA!! *LOL*
-2PM & Beast-Mister: the "butt dance" was fantastic!

Abandoned by divorced parents to be reared by relatives, Shadya was a secluded and quiet child, accompanied by loneliness and uncertainty as she was growing up. Music was her outlet and source of comfort. In her late teens, Shadya was introduced into a Christian ministry, and thereby began her journey into the world.
